Fireplace Surrounds
Is it fair to say, that a fireplace surround is just a fireplace surround?
In my opinion, a fireplace surround, is not just a fireplace surround. In fact, a fireplace
surround, could be many items combined as a complete package, or it could be just the mantel
and slips…
So! Now, if we ask the same question, is a fireplace surround just a fireplace surround, then
a much deeper approach is required for the answer!
In many contemporary styled fireplaces, it is common practice to combine the mantel, the
slips, the hearth and a back panel, as one complete unit, whereas, in more traditional
fireplaces, this is and was not the case.
In many traditional fireplaces, the surrounds are singular in structure, thus, being
separate from the whole, thus constructed individually! It is in my opinion, that there
is slightly more skill and workmanship required for this kind of fireplace.
Surrounds in stone
There are many varying types of stone; limestone, marble, granite, slate, the list goes on.
My favourite, is limestone. The beautifully smooth effect you get, with a well-crafted piece
of Portuguese limestone. I love the effect it can give to a fireplace situated, especially,
in a contemporary-styled living-room!
Granite surrounds would not be my choice, but it is still a favourite for many homes - Shanxi
Black, is an affordable granite, but if you had a little extra cash, I would go for one of the
pearlescent granites, such as; blue pearl, or emerald pearl…
Hey! If you were able to stretch your budget a little further, then I would recommend blue eye
granite, as I stated previously, granite is not my choice, but blue eye granite is something
else. Mined, from quarries in Canada, blue eye granite (also known as blu eye, Labrador
blue eyes, reflect blue and even ten mile bay) is a type of stone, for those with a touch of
class!
Having an expensive price tag, is not the only big thing that can be said about this stone!
It also has large chunks of pearlescent elements, which glow in the sun…
Blue eye granite truly is a beautiful stone, worthy of its expensive price tag!
