Stove Information

Solid fuel stoves, especially wood burning models have become both fashionable and very Green!

Wood, as a sustainable fuel and if used on an excellent stove, fits the bill for your greener credential & is a great method of heating... Many stoves also have optional boilers - you can either have this kind of system combined with your existing system, thus using the gas central heating as a backup, or alternatively, you could have it as a sole central heating system!

Which stove to buy?

There are several very important considerations for you to make before purchasing a multi fuel or wood burning stove.

  1. Stoves with an output of over 5kW require a wall, fresh air vent in your room - this means that there is little difference between say a 4.9kW and one around 6.5kW
  2. In an enclosed room, it is easy to buy a stove that is too big (hot) for the room. It is important to buy a stove that offers the right amount of heat for the space its heating, not the biggest that will fit in the fireplace
  3. You will require a non-combustable Hearth (best in slate, granite or other stone) to go under your stove and extend at least 300mm in front and is best being 50mm or more in thickness
  4. The installation method for your stove is extremely important, HETAS recommended method should be the one you choose, especially for all larger stoves. This entails your stove having a decorative length of flue pipe which passes through a register plate and is then connected to a stainless steel flexible Multi-fuel liner of at least a 6" diameter - this runs the entire length of the flue and is usually connected to a terminal (cowl) at the top. The whole flue is also back-filled with an insulative material to finish; this method is labour intensive and the liner kit is expensive, but it is worth it and is absolutely essential for larger stoves!

The other method is far simpler but should not be used on stoves with a heat output of over 7kW. This method uses a length of stove pipe, which passes through a register plate and then sealed.

This method is far cheaper, but please do not even consider it on the larger stoves - they can get your flue so hot, that it could breach the flue masonry and could cause a serious fire in your house!
  5. Please note; the latter / cheaper method, may not comply with your local building regulations - always check with your local authority prior to installation!
